Student Matinees are special 11am weekday performances of plays that MTC produces during our regular season. Each performance is followed by a lively question-and-answer session with the artists.
MTC’s student matinees help fulfill California educational standards. Grade 9-12 Visual & Performing Arts standards include responding to, analyzing, and critiquing theatrical experiences. The Whipping Man is a new play about the Civil War and the Emanciapation. Earlier this season, both Topdog/Underdog and Waiting for Godot, which have since closed, are on the California Department of Education Recommended Literature List for grades 9-12.To book tickets, click here.
A preview Performance Guide, with a synopsis and dramaturgical information on each production as well as suggestions for classroom exercises, is available for download above.

THE WHIPPING MAN
“Suspenseful, searing... The Whipping Man is hard to shake from one's mind” – The Jewish Week
To mark Passover, two emancipated slaves share an improvised Seder with their former ownerʼs son, who has been wounded during the final days of the Civil War. They discover that, though they are no longer tied by ownership, they remain tied by faith, history and explosive secrets.
Winner of the 2011 John Gassner Playwriting Award by the New York Outer Critics Circle
MTC can send a teaching artist into the school to prepare the students for the production with a series of participatory workshops. These workshops might include acting exercises, group games designed to immerse the students in a particular historical period, and discussions of challenging issues raised in the play.
