MTC releases annual report

ENDS THIRD CONSECUTIVE SEASON
WITH SURPLUS
45-year old professional nonprofit theater releases annual report;
shows increase in revenue to exceed $3 million for first time in history,
acknowledges generous support of Taproot Foundation
MILL VALLEY, CA—Marin Theatre Company’s artistic director Jasson Minadakis, producing director Ryan Rilette and board president Brian Haughton are proud to announce that the professional nonprofit theater ended its 2010-11 season with a surplus and exceeded $3 million in total revenue for the first time in the 45 year-old organization’s history. This is the third year in a row that MTC has ended its season with a surplus. This announcement accompanies the release of MTC’s 2010/11 Annual Report. This is the organization’s first formal annual report, a project made possible by the Taproot Foundation through the donation of consulting services.
“We are extremely grateful to the Taproot Foundation for providing us with the phenomenal team of consultants who helped us create this annual report,” said Rilette. “Last season was a year of firsts for MTC, including a groundbreaking collaboration with A.C.T. and Magic Theatre, the development of an off-site scene shop and the establishment of an Artistic and Operating Reserve Fund. This annual report, also a first, allows us to share the story of our artistic and organizational accomplishments as we continue to celebrate our 45th Anniversary Season. We are grateful to everyone who made it possible.”
In 2010-11, MTC partnered with A.C.T. and Magic Theatre to produce the West Coast premiere of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s The Brother/Sister Plays, staging In the Red & Brown Water, the first play of the trilogy, to open its season. MTC then produced the world premiere of Bill Cain’s 9 Circles, which went on to win the 2011 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association’s New American Play Prize that is awarded to the most outstanding play to premiere outside New York City. The company also produced the West Coast premiere of Lucinda Cox’s Happy Now?, the world premiere of a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Seagull and revivals of David Linday-Abaire’s Fuddy Meers and Edward Albee’s Tiny Alice.
On April 4, 2011, MTC’s artistic director Jasson Minadakis won the San Francisco Bay Area Critics Circle Award for Director (Theatres 100-300 Seats) for his direction of Bill Cain’s Equivocation in March and April of 2010.
In 2010-11, MTC continued its support of the American playwright, developing works by National New Play Network’s Playwright in Residence Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, awarding its annual play prizes to Andrew Dolan and Samuel D. Hunter and commissioning new work by Carson Kreitzer and Steve Yockey. The company also grew behind the scenes, adding two full-time and two part-time staff positions to its production department, opening a new 5,500 square-foot scene shop facility in Oakland and installing new sound and lighting equipment.
MTC’s education programs reached over 5,650 students from 40 Bay Area schools, bringing them together with over 40 Bay Area theater artists.
One of MTC’s most important developments during the 2010-11 Season was the establishment of a $500,000 Artistic and Operating Reserve Fund, which strengthened the company’s financial position and increased its ability to take artistic risks.
MTC’s audited financials reveal that the company ended the fiscal year on June 30, 2011, with a $255,005 surplus, with total revenue of $3,037,161 and total expenses of $2,782,156. This is the third year in a row that MTC has ended the season with a surplus and the first year ever that MTC’s total revenue exceeded $3 million.
Currently celebrating its 45th anniversary season, MTC added a sixth main stage production to its schedule, expanding its programming to become a year-round theater. The organization also has redesigned its website, upgraded its donor database and ticketing software and released its first formal annual report with the support of the Taproot Foundation.
