A riveting production about how one woman sought justice through her art to become one of her generation's most successful painters, this wildly original play packs a punch, with The Guardian calling it “Gripping. Compelling. Tremendous.”
It’s True, It’s True, It’s True was recreated using surviving transcripts from the courtroom during the seven-month trial of Agostino Tassi that gripped Renaissance Rome. Conceived and written by the U.K.'s Breach Theatre, the all-women play recreates the 1612 trial in which Tassi is accused of the assault of 17-year-old baroque painter Artemisia Genteleschi. With three women re-enacting a trial heavily weighted against the victim—who is cross-examined by her own attacker—the work blends fact with the mythical and biblical subjects of Gentleschi’s paintings, and contemporary commentary, to tell the story of how a woman took revenge through her art. This U.S. premiere will be helmed by nationally acclaimed director Rebecca Wear.
Please be advised this play contains non-sexual nudity and adult subject matter.
